Schwarzkopf Says U.S. Should Fare Better Than Soviets
Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf said he believes the U.S. has a better chance than the former Soviet Union of winning a war in Afghanistan.
He said during a speech Friday that the country will fare better than it did in Vietnam.
Schwarzkopf, who led allied forces in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, said the Soviets failed in Afghanistan because they thought they could win quickly with conventional weapons and tactics.
He said the Taliban lacks local support enjoyed by the rebel forces that fought the Russians, while the U.S. military has the high public support it had in the Gulf War.
