Would-Be Robber Killed by His Intended Victims
A 19-year-old man who allegedly tried to rob two couples at gunpoint early Friday was fatally shot after the victims drew their own weapons, police said.
Juan Carlos Diaz of Santa Ana died at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
Police said the incident happened about 1 a.m. when Diaz and another man approached two couples on Rosewood Street and asked for cigarettes. Diaz and the other suspect then pulled handguns and demanded money, said Santa Ana Police Department Officer Mario Carona.
The victims also pulled out handguns and a shootout ensued. The two men being held up were struck by bullets but not fatally injured. They were still hospitalized late Friday for gunshot wounds.
