Five people were killed on Los Angeles County highways during the first 12 hours of the Labor Day weekend, compared with two traffic-related deaths during the same period last year, the California Highway Patrol reported Saturday.

Three of the fatalities occurred in two separate crashes, and involved men in their early 20s, possibly drunk, driving on the wrong side of the roadway.

CHP officers arrested 68 motorists in the county for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, up from 51 such arrests last year. The highway patrol made 389 DUI arrests statewide, compared with 302 during the same time frame last year, authorities said.
