Air Force Is Grounded by Oklahoma
Quarterback Nate Hybl had mixed results Saturday in his second career start for No. 3 Oklahoma but got plenty of help from running back Quentin Griffin and an overwhelming defense as the Sooners defeated Air Force, 44-3, before an Academy record 56,162 spectators.
Griffin ran for a career-best 201 yards in 26 carries for the Sooners (2-0), who extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 15 games.
“I don’t mind handing off,” said Hybl, who completed 14 of 31 passes for 161 yards.
Hybl threw two touchdown passes but also was intercepted inside the Air Force 20. The Falcons failed to take advantage of the early turnover as they struggled against Oklahoma’s quick defenders, who held Air Force to 249 total yards.
Air Force, third nationally with 295 yards rushing a game last year, managed only 137 yards on the ground and lost its home opener for the third time in 18 games under Coach Fisher DeBerry.
