Pitching for Danny
Your letter writers (Sept. 5) are cruel and expect too much of a 14-year-old who, thus far, has been guided by a misguided father. The father and other adults who lied about Danny Almonte’s age are responsible for this year’s Little League fiasco. In due time--and hopefully after Danny is surrounded by better adult examples--he will realize his responsibility in the affair and be able to forgive himself.
It is right to keep Danny out of the media spotlight; he is still a boy. Readers should take a lesson from Johnny Jimenez and Thomas Eukovich and the rest of the Oceanside Little Leaguers--all of them 12-year-olds (“Team Cheered as ‘a Class Act,’ ” Sept. 2)--and put things in perspective.
