The Kings and Mighty Ducks have rescheduled their exhibition opener for Tuesday night at Staples Center. Originally scheduled for Saturday night, the game was among 21 weekend exhibitions postponed or canceled by the NHL in the wake of Tuesday’s terrorist attacks.

All net proceeds from the game, the Kings announced, will be donated to families of fallen New York City police and firefighters in honor of King scouts Ace Bailey and Mark Bavis, who were killed aboard a hijacked airliner used in the attack.

For those wondering how the Kings are going to replace the offensive punch supplied by Luc Robitaille, who was second on the team with 37 goals and 88 points last season, Coach Andy Murray has a suggestion.

“I think Glen Murray can score 37 goals himself,” the coach said, seemingly unfazed by Robitaille’s jump to the Detroit Red Wings via free agency this summer.

Told of his coach’s comment, Glen Murray let out a nervous laugh Thursday after the Kings wrapped up the second day of training camp in El Segundo.

“I hope so, knock on wood,” said the 27-year-old winger, who matched a career high with 29 goals two seasons ago but slipped to 18 last season, when he was sidelined for 18 games because of a strained right thigh muscle.

“We’re going to miss Robitaille, no question about it, and obviously this is the first time [in 11 years] that we’re starting the season without [Rob Blake]. It’s going to be tough, but we have to have guys step up and produce more.”

But is it realistic to think Glen Murray can score 37 goals?

Andy Murray said, “I think at the end of the season, when he comes in to talk about a contract with [General Manager] Dave Taylor, he better have proven that he can. I’ll probably get myself in trouble with Dave, but Glen Murray should be a guy who’s coming in for an increase next year.

“He is in the best shape he’s ever been in. He’s a horse right now. He’s physically stronger than I’ve seen him in two years.”

And he’s not shying away from his coach’s high expectations.

“I welcome that,” said Murray, 6 feet 3 and 225 pounds. “This is the first time they’ve counted on me like this. I look forward to the challenge.”

Saturday, the Kings will play an intrasquad scrimmage at 7 p.m. at HealthSouth training center in El Segundo, open to the public and free of charge.

They’ll play another intrasquad scrimmage Sunday night at 7, also open to the public, before cutting their camp roster from 52 players to about 37 for the second week of practice.
