Storybook Theatre’s 2001-02 season of comical, musical theater for preschoolers and young elementary school-age children opens at Theatre West with the premiere of its new adaptation of “Sleeping Beauty,” with book and lyrics by Lloyd J. Schwartz and music by Michael Paul. The children’s book “The Jester Has Lost His Jingle” has been a small publishing miracle. Written and illustrated by David Saltzman just before his death at age 22 from Hodgkins disease, it was published by his mother, Barbara, in 1995. Since then, Barbara and her nonprofit foundation, the Jester & Pharley Phund, have sold or given away hundreds of thousands of copies of the book, which is about a Jester’s quest to find the missing laughter in his kingdom. In Harold Pinter’s drama “The Birthday Party,” about a party with a mysterious and menacing undercurrent, each role is shared by two actors. Directed by Andrew J. Robinson, the cast, which changes nightly, includes Gregory Itzin, Lawrence Pressman, Armin Shimerman, Angela Paton and many other stage and screen veterans.
