Robert Wise, whose credits include editing “Citizen Kane” and directing the Oscar-winning musicals “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music,” will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Newport Beach Film Festival on Sept. 28.

The award will be bestowed on the 87-year-old director at a celebration at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach following a 50th anniversary screening at 7 p.m. of another of his famous films, “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” The science fiction Cold War parable about a benevolent alien seeking to bring peace to Earth was released Sept. 28, 1951.

Other Wise films include “Run Silent, Run Deep,” “I Want to Live!,” “The Sand Pebbles,” “The Andromeda Strain” and “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” Wise’s award is part of the film festival’s ongoing Spotlight Series of screenings, seminars, presentations and receptions. The festival’s third annual run is April 11-19. Tickets for the Wise screening and reception are $20. (949) 253-2880.
