Barbara Matera, 72; Costume Designer for Movies, Broadway
Barbara Matera, 72, who created costumes for motion pictures, Broadway shows, the New York City Ballet and Metropolitan Opera, died Sept. 13 of a cerebral hemorrhage.
In 1968 she and her husband founded Barbara Matera Ltd., which produced costumes for the current Broadway productions of “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aida,” “Kiss Me, Kate” and “42nd Street.”
As costumer for the American Ballet Theatre, Matera outfitted soloists and the ballet corps for such productions as “Swan Lake” and “Othello.”
Among her film credits were “The Great Gatsby,” “The Addams Family,” “Moonstruck,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” “The Age of Innocence” and “Death on the Nile.”
Matera also created the purple crystal-encrusted gown that Hillary Rodham Clinton wore at her husband’s first presidential inauguration.
