‘Pay These Heroes With More Than Words’

Share

As a citizen and a soldier/medic in the Army reserves, my stomach turns with the videotape, news reporting and photos of the World Trade Center disaster. However, there is a pride that I have when I see people in uniform, unselfishly coming to the aid of strangers. In some instances, giving their lives.

Next time you get the chance, thank a person who wears a uniform for the job he or she does. Whether they wear law-enforcement, fire or military uniforms, those people can never be thanked enough. They stand at the ready for us.

We have given high praise to the men and women of the New York City Police and Fire departments who reflexively ran toward danger while others fled. Who have labored until they are exhausted in body and psyche to help others. It is now time to put our money where our mouths are.

One of the first priorities of local and state legislators across the country should be to raise these men’s and women’s salaries to be commensurate with their worth. If we are able to pay ballplayers millions of dollars, surely we can find the money to pay these heroes with more than words.
