Safety Carlyle Will Miss UCLA Game

Oregon State’s defense, which has given up 66 points in its first two games, could be more vulnerable against No. 12 UCLA on Saturday because starting strong safety Calvin Carlyle won’t play.

Carlyle will miss the game because of a sore left shoulder. The senior has had surgery on both shoulders during his career and his left shoulder popped out of place during practice last week.

Redshirt freshman Mitch Meeuwsen will start at the position for the Beavers (1-1).

Oregon reserve cornerback A.K. Keyes has decided to give up football on the advice of team doctors after a second neck injury, Coach Mike Bellotti said.

Keyes, from Los Alamitos High, spent Saturday night in a hospital after teammate Kevin Mitchell accidentally kicked him in the head during the first quarter of the sixth-ranked Ducks’ 24-22 win over USC. Keyes was diagnosed with a narrow spinal during summer camp after he had complained of tingling in his hands and feet following a tackle.

Carlyle Holiday will start at quarterback for Notre Dame on Saturday against Texas A&M; as the Irish try to help their struggling offense. Holiday replaces Matt LoVecchio, who led the Irish to seven straight wins and a Fiesta Bowl appearance last season.

Pittsburgh All-American receiver Antonio Bryant, limited to one play all season, is still hobbling on a sprained left ankle and might miss Thursday’s game against No. 1 Miami .... Mississippi State running back Dicenzo Miller, the team’s leading rusher, will likely miss Saturday’s game at No. 2 Florida because of a sprained ankle .... Southern Mississippi will play at Alabama Nov. 29 to make up a game canceled because of the terrorist attacks.
