Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn on Tuesday nominated three new commissioners to serve on the city Board of Public Works, which oversees trash service, street repairs and other basic city services.

Hahn also is seeking to reappoint two commissioners who served under former Mayor Richard Riordan. The commissioners, who are expected to work full time, are each paid $93,231 a year.

“We want this board to be very active in improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods,” Hahn said. “When you are fixing potholes and trimming trees and paving streets, it might not seem that exciting. But it’s important to the people who pay taxes.”

Hahn is asking the City Council to appoint Ronald Low, Janice Wood and Adriana Rubalcava to serve with current commissioners Valerie Lynne Shaw and Ellen Stein.

Rubalcava is the chief of staff to Councilman Nick Pacheco, who actively supported Hahn’s mayoral bid. Low, who spent 11 years working with Hahn in the city attorney’s office, is a construction company consultant. Wood is executive vice president of a telecommunications union.

Shaw and Stein--who were both appointed to the board during Riordan’s tenure-- are known for their work in South-Central Los Angeles.

The mayor’s nominees are subject to City Council approval.
