Clemens, Yankees Lose, but Win East

Baseball returned to the Bronx on Tuesday night with a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks and another division championship for the New York Yankees.

The Yankees, playing at home for the first time since the tragedies Sept. 11, clinched their fourth consecutive American League East title when Boston lost to Baltimore.

Tanyon Sturtze (9-12) outpitched Roger Clemens to give the Tampa Bay Devil Rays a 4-0 victory.

Clemens (20-2) lost for the first time since May 20 at Seattle, ending a 16-game winning streak. He struck out nine to move into third place on the career list.

Baltimore 12, Boston 7-Tony Batista, Chris Richard and Luis Matos homered at Boston as the Orioles eliminated the Red Sox from the AL East race.

Batista hit a grand slam in the ninth for a 12-7 lead after Boston scored three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull within 8-7.

Seattle 13, Texas 2-Bret Boone had three hits and drove in four runs at Arlington, Texas, and the Mariners set an AL record for road victories.

John Olerud, Carlos Guillen and Al Martin homered for Seattle. Ichiro Suzuki stole two bases, giving him 50.

The Mariners are 56-21 on the road, breaking the league mark established by the 1971 Oakland Athletics. The 1906 Chicago Cubs hold the major league record with a 60-15 record.

Aaron Sele (14-5) gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings.

Cleveland 11, Toronto 7-Kenny Lofton’s three-run single capped a five-run eighth inning for the Indians at Cleveland.

Russell Branyan had three hits and three runs batted in for Cleveland.

Minnesota 4, Chicago 2-Doug Mientkiewicz hit a go-ahead single to cap a three-run eighth inning at Chicago.

Joe Mays (17-13) continued his dominance over the White Sox, running his career record to 6-0. He gave up two runs and four hits and struck out six in seven innings.

Detroit 6, Kansas City 4-Bobby Higginson hit a three-run homer for the Tigers at Kansas City.

Jose Lima (5-8) picked up his third victory over the Royals since being acquired from Houston on June 23. He had lost his previous five starts.

Lima gave up one run and eight hits in 71/3 innings.
