Lakers Are Expected to Sign Scott Today

The Lakers are expected to sign veteran shooter Dennis Scott to a one-year contract today.

Scott, who turned 33 on Sept. 5 and did not play in the NBA last season, made 39.7% of his three-point attempts and averaged 12.9 points in a 10-year career. He spent four of those years as a teammate of Shaquille O’Neal’s in Orlando, and the two remain close.

Scott, at 6 feet 8, will attempt to make the team as a small forward, where the Lakers are thin, with only Rick Fox and Devean George. The team signed Dickey Simpkins on Tuesday. A 6-foot-9 forward, Simpkins, 29, also was out of the league last season after being released from Seattle’s training camp. He played on three of Laker Coach Phil Jackson’s last three championship teams in Chicago. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in six seasons.

The Lakers also expected to sign Paul Shirley, a 6-10 forward out of Iowa State.
