Traffic Signals to Get Battery Backup Systems
- Share via
Traffic signals at key Santa Monica intersections will be equipped with battery backup power systems to prevent accidents and tie-ups during future electricity outages, city officials said.
The battery systems will be installed at 95 of the city’s most “significant” intersections. Santa Monica’s other 70 intersections are not as heavily used, officials said.
The backup power will automatically switch on in the event of rolling blackouts ordered by Southern California Edison Co. or power failure caused by traffic accidents. Officials said the batteries will power signals for up to four hours. They will automatically be recharged when electricity is restored.
