They’ve Finally Put the D in Westwood

Words I thought I would never write: Only a superhuman effort by a resolute UCLA defense was enough to overcome a bumbling Bruin offense and the agonizingly predictable play-calling of Coach Bob Toledo.

Whoa! From the tenor of Bill Dwyre and Bill Plaschke’s Sunday columns, they are all but ready to hand-deliver the national championship to UCLA.

A little perspective is needed here.

Granted, the Bruins have made strides forward improving their defense, but a closer look at their first three opponents reveals that both Alabama and Ohio State have offenses that are, at best, stumbling out of the gate, and and Kansas is just plain awful.

As for UCLA’s offense, I seem to recall a much higher-octane version the last few years piling up the points, only to commit costly turnovers and the defense deflating soon after. This year’s offense looks incapable of producing large leads and putting away the opposition, and in that event the defense had better be good.

Let’s wait a couple of weeks before putting in requisitions for BCS championship-game credentials.
