The Los Angeles Police Department on Monday called for the public’s help in solving the slaying of an 18-year-old honor student and varsity basketball player at Verdugo Hills High School who was found dead in a closet.

Linda Au was found Sunday morning in her mother’s home in the 3200 block of Baldwin Street in Lincoln Heights. Police said she had been beaten and possibly strangled, but an autopsy would be necessary to determine the cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information to call a toll-free number, (877) 529-3855. Investigating officers are Dets. Joe Preciado and Tom Herman of the Hollenbeck station.

Monica Carazo, a Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman, said that Au was well-liked at her high school and had never been in trouble. Extra counselors were sent to the school to comfort students.

Neighbors heard screams from the house about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Before police arrived, however, Au’s mother found her body underneath a pile of clothes in a bedroom closet.

No suspects have been identified, said police spokesman Don Cox.
