Council Approves Chavez Holiday
Members of the Los Angeles City Council approved a plan Tuesday to establish both Cesar Chavez and Columbus Day as holidays for city employees.
The proposal, which must be approved by the mayor, removes the half-day holiday city employees get on Dec. 24.
Last month, the council set off a heated debate when it allowed 2,000 city employees to take off Cesar Chavez’s birthday instead of Columbus Day. The plan drew criticism from many Italian Americans. Since then, city leaders have been seeking a compromise.
