Kansas City Ends Its Drought in Dallas, 1-0

Stephen Armstrong scored in the 77th minute to give the Kansas City Wizards a 1-0 victory at Dallas on Wednesday night.

Armstrong dribbled past Burn defender Ronnie O’Brien and fired a shot from outside the left corner of the goalie box that glanced off O’Brien’s foot and into the corner of the net.

The victory was the first for Kansas City (7-7-7) over the Burn (8-5-7) in Dallas since May 20, 1998.

Tony Meola recorded his second shutout of the season with six saves, including a sliding save of a shot by Eddie Johnson in the 90th minute.

Kansas City’s Igor Simutenkov had two chances to score on breakaways in the second half but shot wide in the 62nd minute and was stopped by Dallas goalie Matt Jordan in the 73rd.

Columbus 3, New York-New Jersey 2--Brian McBride and Jeff Cunningham each had a goal and an assist to lead the Crew at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Crew (8-9-4) has 28 points, pulling within a point of the first-place MetroStars (9-10-2) in the Eastern Conference.

D.C. United 0, Fire 0-- D.C. United’s Nick Rimando and the Chicago Fire’s Zach Thornton each made six saves at Naperville, Ill., as the teams played to a 0-0 tie for the second time in 11 days.

Washington 5, Carolina 2--Bai Jie and Mia Hamm each scored twice in the second half as the Freedom extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a victory at Cary, N.C.

San Jose 2, Philadelphia 0--Katia, the league’s top scorer with 15 goals and 33 points, had a goal and an assist to lead the CyberRays at San Jose.

Atlanta 4, San Diego 1--Homare Sawa scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Beat at San Diego.
