A 7-month-old boy who was in the back seat when his mother’s SUV was stolen Thursday was found hours later inside the vehicle in Tijuana, authorities said.

The carjacker, described as a teenager, apparently was unaware that Guillermo Cardena was in the Ford Expedition when he stole it and crossed the border, officials said. Marilyn Cardena told police she had left the baby in the SUV while delivering a package to a home in San Ysidro, a San Diego neighborhood along the border.

The state’s new Amber Alert system was activated for the second time--the first being earlier Thursday when two Antelope Valley teenagers were kidnapped. It alerted drivers along freeways to watch for the Ford Expedition.

Just south of the border, a relative who had followed the SUV rammed his car into the vehicle to try to rescue the child, officials said. But in the confusion, the kidnapper got away. The carjacker was at large Thursday evening.
