Medication Urged for Capitol Shootout Suspect
Government attorneys asked a judge to continue the forced medication of Russell Eugene Weston Jr., who is accused of killing two Capitol police officers in 1998.
Dr. Sally Johnson, a psychiatrist with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, said Weston’s condition appears to have improved since he began taking the anti-psychotic medicine in January. Johnson said there is a substantial probability the medicine could help Weston regain his competence within 18 months.
Prosecutors hope the medicine will make Weston stable enough to stand trial on federal murder charges.
Weston is accused of gunning down officers Jacob Chestnut and John Gibson at their posts inside the Capitol. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
Weston’s public defender, A.J. Kramer, said his client is delusional and has not improved.
