Public Confidence in Media Falling, Poll Finds

From Times Wire Reports

Public opinion concerning the media has fallen to pre-Sept. 11 levels, according to the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. Coinciding with the decline are a rise in suspicion about corporate America and a return of partisan politics.

“When the news becomes more contentious, the public becomes more critical of the messenger,” center director Andrew Kohut said.

Almost 75% of poll respondents in November said that news organizations are highly professional. That percentage since has dropped by about half. In November, fewer than half those polled said news organizations are biased; 6 in 10 feel that way now.
