Youth Group’s Season Set

The American Youth Symphony, conducted by music director Alexander Treger and assistant conductor Mario Miragliotta, will play seven concerts during its 38th anniversary season, including its gala benefit at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, scheduled for May 18, and a special appearance at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, March 10.

Pianist Yefim Bronfman will be the soloist at the May 18 concert, where he is scheduled to play Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto.

The five other concerts take place in UCLA’s Royce Hall, the ensemble’s home auditorium. At the opening, Oct. 27, Treger will conduct Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

Flutist Adrianna Lis plays the Flute Concerto by Reinecke at the Nov. 24 event, when the program also includes Richard Strauss’ “Don Juan” and the Suite from Stravinsky’s “The Firebird.” Yvonne Lam is soloist in Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 on Jan. 26.

Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony and Weber’s “Freischutz” Overture are on the Feb. 23 program, when the soloist is pianist Xi Bei Ja, playing the Schumann Concerto.

Miragliotta’s appearance at the March 30 concert features six soloists from the orchestra in addition to Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony. Treger conducts again April 20, when his soloist is violinist Radu Pieptea, who plays the Sibelius Concerto.
