Malibu’s Stewart Reaches National Final
No. 8-seeded Malibu High graduate Doug Stewart advanced to the championship match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Super National Hard Court Championships with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory over top-seeded Brian Baker of Nashville, the No. 1-ranked junior player in the nation, Saturday at Kalamazoo, Mich.
“I hadn’t really played my best tennis all week,” Stewart said. “It just took me some time to get used to things and get going, I guess. But I felt really good on the court and I played really well today.”
Stewart will face No. 2-seeded Prakash Amritraj of Encino in today’s title match.
Amritraj defeated fourth-seeded Robert Yim of Glendale, 7-6 (5), 6-4, in the other semifinal Saturday.
The winner of today’s match will earn a wild-card entry into the U.S. Open in New York.
