Update--The Sparks caught a break Saturday when Houston lost to Sacramento, moving Los Angeles into first place by a half-game in the Western Conference. The Sparks can clinch the conference title by winning their final two games. The Lynx, tied with Phoenix for last place in the West, have had a season to forget. Former coach Brian Agler was kicked upstairs to the general manager’s post on July 16 and replaced on the bench by Heidi VanDerveer (whose sister, Tara, coaches at Stanford). Minnesota, 6-13 at the time of the change, has gone 4-7 under VanDerveer. The Lynx’s three-game winning streak was ended Friday by Charlotte, which clinched an Eastern Conference playoff spot with the victory.
