Both Separated Twins Breathe on Their Own
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A pair of Guatemalan twins are breathing on their own after a complicated operation that separated them Aug. 6, a UCLA spokeswoman said.
Year-old twins Maria Teresa and Maria de Jesus Quiej Alvarez have been upgraded from critical to serious condition, she said.
Maria de Jesus, whose breathing tube was removed Tuesday, has begun feeding from a baby bottle. Maria Teresa started breathing on her own Thursday. She remains sedated and receives nutrition intravenously.
