Jose Lima gave up one run in seven strong innings Monday night and the Tigers held on to beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-3, at Detroit.

Detroit beat the Mariners for the first time this season as Seattle lost for the third time in four games and fell two percentage points behind the idle Angels, who moved into first place in the American League West.

Trailing, 4-1, in the ninth, the Mariners scored two runs off closer Juan Acevedo. Ichiro Suzuki hit a one-out RBI single and scored with two out on Tiger shortstop Shane Halter’s throwing error. Bret Boone then hit a sinking liner to right, but Robert Fick made a tumbling catch to end the game.

Seattle had three consecutive singles in the fifth, but failed to score. Suzuki was thrown out stealing and Mark McLemore was thrown out trying to go from first to third on John Olerud’s single. Bobby Higginson chased down the ball in left-center and threw out McLemore by about 10 feet.

Seattle outfielder Ruben Sierra later left the game with a strained left quadriceps.

Oakland 8, Cleveland 1--Tim Hudson pitched 8 1/3 innings to remain unbeaten in August and Eric Chavez homered twice at Cleveland as the Athletics won their sixth in a row and moved to within one game of first in the AL West. Hudson (10-9) is 3-0 with a 1.21 earned-run average this month. Jim Thome hit his 38th homer for the Indians.

Minnesota 7, Chicago 3--Jacque Jones hit two of the Twins’ five homers and Brad Radke got his first win since May 8 to highlight Minnesota’s victory at Chicago. Jones and Cristian Guzman hit back-to-back homers to start the game.

Toronto 2, Kansas City 0--Pete Walker pitched two-hit ball for seven innings and the Blue Jays won at Toronto to stop a five-game losing streak. Shannon Stewart homered, scored twice and made an over-the-shoulder catch at the left-field wall.

Tampa Bay 7, Baltimore 3--The Devil Rays hit a club-record three homers in a seven-run second inning at Baltimore and Paul Wilson beat the Orioles for the fourth time this season.
