Horses Die at Del Mar in Separate Incidents

A horse was euthanized during training hours at Del Mar and another died of an apparent heart attack during the running of the fourth race Friday.

In the morning, Golden Hours, the morning-line favorite for the eighth race, could not be saved after he fractured his right foreleg during a gallop. On Friday night, Global Gait collapsed in the stretch run and died near the eighth pole.

His jockey, David Flores, was not seriously injured. Global Gait, who was bought in January 2001 by Bob and Beverly Lewis for an estimated $600,000, was a Kentucky Derby prospect who dropped off the Triple Crown trail after running seventh in last year’s Lexington Stakes. He was winless in eight starts for the Lewises.

Kachamandi, with only one victory in nine U.S. starts, paid $7.60 for his win in the Harry F. Brubaker Handicap.

The 5-year-old gelding was ridden by Pat Valenzuela, Del Mar’s leading rider, who was handed a seven-day suspension by the stewards because of the way he rode Ourfirstattraction in Wednesday’s eighth race.

The suspension is to begin next Friday.
