Pringle’s Career Ups and Downs

A state legislator from Orange County during most of 1988-98, Pringle prevailed in a power struggle to become speaker of the Assembly in January 1996, a job he lost that autumn when the GOP lost the majority in the November elections. While in the Assembly, his reputation evolved from that of back-bench ideologue to key Republican legislative leader. He opened an Orange County lobbying firm after retiring from the Assembly.

Education: Completed high school in Los Alamitos; graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in public administration.

Career highlights: Elected to the Assembly in 1988; defeated for reelection in 1990. Elected to a new Assembly seat in 1992 and served through 1998, during which he was briefly speaker, then minority leader. Republican nominee for state treasurer in 1998.
