No Checks to Balance Punitive Awards
When the California Supreme Court rejected Ford Motor Co.’s appeal of the record $290-million punitive damages verdict, it did very little in terms of restoring balance and fairness to our courts (“Record Verdict Against Ford Allowed to Stand,” Oct. 24).
This punitive award is clearly excessive and prompts the question: What happened to the checks and balances that were designed to be at the core of our democracy?
