Student Wins Fight Over Bible Quote in Class
A sophomore at Santa Maria High School who lost her French Club presidency and a spot on a school trip to France after objecting to the use of a biblical phrase in class has gained both back.
Sierra Leffers, 15, said she was punished for asking a teacher to remove a quote from John 1:14 on the classroom board on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
School officials reinstated Leffers, who practices the Wiccan religion, after she and her mother contacted lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union.
