Darin Erstad, the Angels’ Gold Glove center fielder, set the American League record for consecutive errorless chances by an outfielder and didn’t know it at the time.

Erstad had 723 consecutive chances from May 30, 2001, to last Sept. 22, breaking Ken Griffey Jr.’s record of 573.

Erstad also set the single-season AL record with 458 consecutive errorless chances in the outfield, topping the 393 Devon White had in 1991.

Todd Walker became Boston’s regular second baseman when he was obtained from the Cincinnati Reds in Theo Epstein’s first trade as the general manager of the Red Sox.

Walker, only seven months older than the 28-year-old Epstein, replaces Rey Sanchez, who became a free agent. Boston gave up two minor leaguers for Walker, who has a .292 career batting average.
