Mormons Give $25,000 to L.A. Catholic Charities Program

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated $25,000 to a Roman Catholic charities program operated by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

The check from the LDS Foundation was presented this week to Cardinal Roger M. Mahony by Mormon Elder Tad Callister.

The money will be used by Cathedral Charities -- run by Sister Patricia Geoghegan -- to fund intramural basketball and baseball teams for 420 youths who live in nearby low-income housing.

Steve Gilliland, a Mormon spokesman, said the church had long planned to contribute something “in honor of the wonderful and beautiful cathedral and all the good Catholic charities do throughout the world.”

“As churches in the community, we need to pull together and support each other, especially at a time when religious establishments are under attack,” Gilliland said, referring to the last year’s continuing sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church.

“We need to focus also on the good they do. The Catholic Church is under the gun right now, but a lot of times people are forgetting the wonderful services they are providing for the community.”
