Jacobsen Scores 49 for Stanford

Casey Jacobsen turned in one of the finest performances ever by a Stanford player, scoring 49 points as the 18th-ranked Cardinal defeated Arizona State, 90-81, on Thursday night at Palo Alto.

Julius Barnes had 18 points for Stanford (13-5, 6-3), one of two Pacific 10 Conference teams unbeaten at home this season, and Curtis Borchardt had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Jacobsen scored 31 points in the second half, and was 14 of 22 overall from the field. Only Hank Luisetti--with 50 points against Duquesne in 1937--has scored more in a Stanford uniform.

Jacobsen’s effort was the most ever by a player at Maples Pavilion, and the first time a Cardinal reached 40 points in a game since Ron Tomsic did it during the 1954-55 season. The former Maples mark was held by Arizona’s Damon Stoudamire with 45.

Jacobsen, who made six of 10 three-points shots, entered the game with a 21.3 scoring average against the Sun Devils, his best against any opponent.

Chad Prewitt scored 18 points to lead Arizona State (11-8, 4-6), which lost its third in four games. The Sun Devils lost their eighth consecutive to Stanford and for the 12th time in 13 games.Borchardt completed a three-point play with 9:36 remaining to tie the game at 62-62 and Jacobsen made an NBA-range three-pointer less than 30 seconds later to put the Cardinal in front for good.

No. 19 Arizona 68, California 58--Jason Gardner scored all but two of his 17 points in the second half and the Wildcats stopped the Bears’ 12-game home winning streak at Berkeley.

In Arizona Coach Lute Olson’s 600th game, the Wildcats (14-6, 7-3) went on a 12-0 run midway through the second half to break a 49-49 tie.

Rick Anderson had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Luke Walton had 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for Arizona, which had lost two consecutive.

Joe Shipp had 12 points, Ryan Forehan-Kelly 11 and Brian Wethers and Amit Tamir 10 each for the Bears (14-5, 5-4), who lost a second consecutive game for the first time this season.

Washington State 81, Washington 79--Marcus Moore had 28 points and Jerry McNair had 20 points to lead the Cougars to a victory at Pullman, Wash.

The victory ended 12-game overall and conference losing streaks for Washington State.

The Cougars (5-14, 1-10) shot only 39% in the first half, but 50% in the second half and were 14 of 19 from the free-throw line.

Doug Wrenn led Washington (8-13, 2-9) with a career-high 34 points. David Dixon tied a school record with seven blocked shots.
