Mahony to Honor 5 for Their Service to the Church

Construction executive Edward Illig and retired nurse Vivian Burgess are among five people being honored tonight by Cardinal Roger M. Mahony for lifetimes of service to the Roman Catholic Church and the community.

Illig, of St. Bede the Venerable Church in La Canada Flintridge, has been active in many educational and church organizations. Burgess, of Transfiguration Church in Los Angeles, was head nurse at Queen of Angels Hospital.

Also to be honored are Thomas E. Laubacher of Santa Clara Church in Oxnard, who served three terms on the Ventura County Board of Supervisors; Sister Mary Jean Meier, director of special services for the Los Angeles Archdiocese; and Hilmar Rosenast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Santa Clarita, a recently retired executive with Hilton Hotels.

Proceeds from the annual awards dinner go to support local Catholic charities and designated low-income parishes and schools in the archdiocese. Since 1990, $3.5million has been collected and distributed.

This year, proceeds from the awards dinner will benefit San Miguel School in Watts and St. Aloysius Gonzaga School in South-Central Los Angeles.
