Sometimes, It’s Downright Pit-iful

UCLA’s 13 losses at McArthur Court since 1964-65, when Oregon rejoined the Bruins in the same conference for the first time since 1958-59:

1966: OREGON 79, UCLA 72

The Bruins wouldn’t lose again in conference for three years and 45 games.

1970: OREGON 78, UCLA 65

The Bruins were 21-0 and ranked No. 1 coming into this game. The loss would also be only one of three during UCLA’s run of seven NCAA championship seasons which started in 1966-67.

1974: OREGON 56, UCLA 51

This game followed a 61-57 loss to Oregon State at Corvallis--the Bruins’ first conference back-to-back defeats in eight years.

1977: OREGON 64, UCLA 55

This was one of three losses in a Pacific 8 championship season for the Bruins in Gene Bartow’s second--and final--season as coach. An NCAA tournament loss to Idaho State also had something to do with Bartow’s departure.

1984: OREGON 62, UCLA 51

This was one of eight Pacific 10 losses that sealed Larry Farmer’s fate as Bruin coach.

1986: OREGON 80, UCLA 65

This loss was the last in a 9-9 Pacific 10 season, the Bruins’ worst conference showing since 1952-53. Adding insult to injury, UCLA lost its next game to UC Irvine in the first round of the NIT at Pauley Pavilion.

1990: OREGON 105, UCLA 99

The 105 points, at the time, were the fifth most given up by the Bruins.

1994: OREGON 80, UCLA 79

This loss prevented the Bruins from tying for the Pacific 10 championship and it altered their NCAA tournament regional seeding. UCLA wound up having to travel to Oklahoma City for what amounted to a home game for its first-round opponent Tulsa--a school that Ed O’Bannon couldn’t give the location of during the Selection Sunday press conference. The Golden Hurricane blew past the Bruins, 112-102.

1995: OREGON 82, UCLA 72

The Bruins lost their Pac-10 opener, then reeled off 26 consecutive victories en route to their first NCAA championship since 1974-75.

1997: OREGON 87, UCLA 85

The Bruins overcame this overtime loss to the Ducks--and the biggest loss in school history (48 points) to Stanford a month earlier--to reach the NCAA tournament’s round of eight.

1998: OREGON 97, UCLA 81

This lopsided loss was followed five games later by the second-worst defeat (44 points) in school history to Duke. The Bruins, however, managed to reach the NCAA tournament’s round of 16.

2000: OREGON 73, UCLA 58

The Bruins shrugged off this loss, and seven others in the Pac-10, to reach NCAA tournament round of 16.

2002: OREGON 91, UCLA 62

Thursday night’s loss was the third-worst (29 points) in conference for the Bruins since the Pac-10 was formed in 1978-79.
