He’ll Get Another Call

Because of bad weather, Oaklawn Park canceled racing Wednesday, meaning there will be a pick six carryover of more than $144,000 if the action resumes today at the Arkansas track.

If a player is going to Santa Anita or one of the various simulcast sites, he or she won’t be able to get in on the action at Oaklawn. Santa Anita is only offering races 5-9 this afternoon and the pick six there starts on the third race.

In the second leg of the local pick six, Call Me Again will try to break his maiden for a second time. The 5-year-old son of Phone Trick defeated $25,000 maidens by seven lengths last Aug. 1 at Del Mar, but was later disqualified from the purse money because of a medication violation.

Owned by the Thoroughbred Corporation and trained by John Shirreffs, Call Me Again is the 5-2 second choice in today’s race, a six-furlong dash for $25,000 claimers. Most recently, the gray was second at 26-1 behind $16,000 winners, beaten two lengths by veteran Weinhard and finishing a nose in front of No Apollogee, who has seven victories.

In the seventh, trainer Bobby Frankel will saddle the first and second choices in the about 61/2-furlong turf race that attracted nine runners.

Beefeater Baby, who finished second in her first race in more than six months on Jan. 6, is the 5-2 favorite and Langoureuse, who beat lesser over the course on New Year’s Eve, is 7-2.

Other contenders include Nanogram, who has two wins down the hillside for trainer John Sadler, recent upset winner Walts Wharf and Slew City Liz.

Race of the day: The third is a $16,000 claimer for 3-year-old fillies and mares where Be Nice will try for a repeat in her first for Bob Hess Jr.

Who’s hot: Joe Badilla Jr. The leading quarter horse jockey in 2001 with 183 wins and more than $2.7 million in earnings, Badilla will be back in action Friday night at Los Alamitos after taking some time off to get completely healthy.

Exotically speaking: Exacta boxes in the third keying Sieze Her with Bartley, Be Nice and Prospective Angel.
