Murray Has ‘Nice Problem’

Share

Imagine having a better goals-against average than Patrick Roy and Dominik Hasek but you can’t get off the bench long enough to rank among the top goaltenders in the league.

For Jamie Storr, who has not played in 11 of the Kings’ last 12 games, including Thursday night against the Carolina Hurricanes, that’s reality.

Despite having a 1.89 goals-against average, Storr has found playing time tough to come by because Coach Andy Murray has stuck with No. 1 goalie Felix Potvin, who had a 1.98 average over his previous 25 games before Thursday.

“We have one guy who wants to be in there for every one and another guy who has the best goals against in the league right now

Storr’s 729 minutes fall short of the 780 needed to qualify statistically among league goalies.

With the Kings playing at Phoenix tonight, Storr would be a logical choice to start. But because the Kings’ next game isn’t until Monday against Dallas at Staples Center, Murray will wait as long as possible to make his decision.

“There is so much on the line right now with every game,” Murray said. “I don’t think you want to do something that you may feel different about later. I would rather not tell a guy until later.”
