Authorities on Monday identified two teenagers killed when a car plunged into Lake Hughes over the weekend.

Clifford Johnson, 19, of the Lake Hughes area and Timothy William Grimsley, 15, of Green Valley died when their car went over the side of Lake Elizabeth Road on Saturday night, California Highway Patrol Officer Rusty Moore said.

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office is conducting an autopsy, but preliminary evidence suggests the two drowned, Moore said.

The driver, 20-year-old Caleb Burge, was taken by helicopter to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where the CHP said he was in serious condition. Blood tests show Burge was not intoxicated, Moore said.

Burge was wearing a seat belt but the two passengers were not, according to the CHP.

Grimsley’s mother, Martine Kurs, said her son had moved from her home in Lake Hughes to his father’s home in nearby Green Valley about a month ago.
