Two sheriff’s deputies were injured when a driver lost control of his car and struck them as they were making vehicle security checks at John Wayne Airport.

Sammy Black, a 22-year-veteran, had both legs broken in several places Tuesday. Christopher Hancock, who has been with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for two years, suffered cuts and bruises, officials said.

The deputies were searching rental cars being returned when a car driven by George Mack, 80, of Salem, Ore., slammed into one of the vehicles, pinning Black between two bumpers, authorities said. The car he was inspecting then slid into the car in front, striking Hancock.
