Washington to Vote on Tyson Today
The three-member D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission is expected to convene today to vote on whether to approve Mike Tyson for a boxing license. If approved, it could result in a June 8 heavyweight fight at MCI Center against Lennox Lewis.
Tyson, whose license application was denied by Nevada on Jan. 29, formally filed paperwork with the D.C. commission last week. To be licensed, he needs approval from a majority of the three-member panel.
“If Mike is licensed [in D.C.], it’s not quite a formality that we would have the fight there, but it’s pretty close to that,” Shelly Finkel, Tyson’s advisor, said Monday from New York. “Of course, we would have to get Lennox to agree, but I don’t think that would be a problem.”
D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams said last week he supported bringing the Lewis-Tyson bout to the city if the commission granted a license to Tyson.
