From Times Wire Reports

Shark attacks on humans, the subject of sensational summer headlines that made it seem the ocean predators were on a rampage, actually declined slightly last year, Florida researchers said.

Researchers at the University of Florida recorded 76 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide in 2001, down from 85 the previous year. Five attacks were fatal, down from 12 a year earlier, an official said.

The United States saw 55 shark attacks last year compared with 54 the previous year.
