From Times Wire Reports
In an effort to help save a butterfly from extinction, the National Park Service has cut down trees in the Marin Headlands to restore an inviting habitat. The park service is spending $209,000 to yank out the trees.
The Headlands is one of three areas nationally where the federally endangered mission blue butterfly still thrives.
At one time, the butterflies were plentiful in Marin and the San Francisco Peninsula, but urban and suburban sprawl have severely diminished their numbers.
