One person died when a car and tanker truck collided on an interstate in Birmingham. The accident sparked an explosion that damaged an overpass at one of the state’s busiest interchanges.

The explosion happened about 10:30 a.m., authorities said.

Police spokesman Lt. Henry Irby said the car and 18-wheel truck were both traveling north on Interstate 65. The vehicles collided just before the interchange with I-20 and I-59.

“The tanker slid up under the I-65 bridge and exploded,” Irby said.

A 50-foot section of the four-lane overpass was sagging, and Irby said officials feared it would fall.
