Ex-Administrator Convicted in Attacks
A former administrator on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica was convicted of ordering arson attacks that destroyed two seaside cafes in 1999.
Bernard Bonnet, 53, was sentenced to three years in prison--two of them suspended--after a court convicted him of destroying property by fire and complicity. He immediately appealed the decision.
Prosecutors argued that Bonnet ordered the attacks out of revenge after having been unable to close the cafes by legal means. The cafes reportedly were popular with nationalists who have waged a campaign of violence for more autonomy.
