Artistically Correct

Share

Admittedly, I have been slow to learn the lesson, but “Catholics Slam Napa Art Exhibit” (Jan. 5) made me see the light. Political correctness doesn’t just mean that we should be sensitive to the feelings of particular groups, such as American Indians. It also means that art groups, such as Copia in the Napa Valley, should spend taxpayer money to insult Catholics.

I did not get the message when the Brooklyn Museum of Art used government money to show a portrait of the Virgin Mary smeared with elephant dung, but the scales have dropped from my eyes. The next time someone suggests that what I say or write about a person is not politically correct, I’ll ask if the person is Catholic. If so, I’ll continue what I’m doing and apply for an NEA grant.
