Boat Seen on Lake Bottom, but No Victims

A private deep-water diving firm hired by the families of four men believed to have been killed in a boating accident on Castaic Lake discovered the sunken wreckage of the luxury powerboat early Sunday evening with the use of a submersible camera, authorities said.

The boat was 246 feet below the surface, too deep for county divers. Three employees and a customer of an Agua Dulce boat-building company were testing a new boat at high speed Friday when it capsized. The body of Ken Lane, 41, of La Crescenta was found.

The families had hired a diving company from Ventura, but the firm turned down the job Sunday morning because it lacked the proper equipment to proceed, said Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Pena.

A San Diego firm was then called in and began searching. The bodies of the three missing men were not found, but the firm and the Sheriff’s Department will attempt to raise the vessel today.
