1 Killed, 5 Hurt in Crash With Ambulance

One man was killed and five people were injured when a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance and several other vehicles collided late Monday, authorities said.

A 42-year-old man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, died after the car he was driving collided with the ambulance on 3rd Street near La Brea Avenue about 11:30 p.m., Los Angeles police said.

Police said three other vehicles crashed as they entered the intersection. None of the other injuries were believed to be life-threatening, authorities said.

The accident occurred when the ambulance was responding to a call in the 900 block of South Crenshaw Boulevard, where a 65-year-old man was having trouble breathing, said Jim Wells, a city Fire Department spokesman.

Wells said the ambulance was traveling with its siren and emergency lights operating when the accident occurred.

The driver of the first car to collide with the ambulance was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he died, Wells said.

Authorities said a 41-year-old pregnant woman who was driving one of the other cars was taken to Cedars-Sinai in stable condition. A 32-year-old man who was taken to Midway Hospital for treatment and another unidentified man suffered minor injuries, they said. The two paramedics in the ambulance were treated and released in good condition, authorities said.
