Stanford’s Style Points Are Key

A different style still meant the same results as No. 19 Stanford raced to yet another victory over Washington.

Casey Jacobsen scored 21 points and Curtis Borchardt had 19 at Palo Alto as the Cardinal remained undefeated at home this season with a 105-60 victory over the Huskies on Saturday night.

Julius Barnes had 15 points as Stanford (11-4, 4-2) extended its winning streak over the Huskies to nine consecutive.

“We don’t have the big bodies up front anymore, so we have to play more of a full court game,” Borchardt said. “Jason and Jarron [Collins] just swallowed up rebounds. We don’t have that this year, so we have to be more intense.”

David Dixon recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 16 rebounds and 13 points to lead Washington (7-11, 1-7), which lost its sixth consecutive on the road. Doug Wrenn had 16 points and Curtis Allen had 13.

It was Stanford’s largest margin of victory ever against Washington, and the most points the Cardinal have scored against the Huskies. It was Washington’s third-worst loss ever.

“I feel a lot better after this weekend,” said Stanford Coach Mike Montgomery, whose team plays at UCLA on Thursday and at USC on Saturday. “We know it’s going to get a lot tougher.”

No. 23 Oregon 63, Oregon State 51--Frederick Jones scored 16 points and Robert Johnson had 11 rebounds as the Ducks stayed tied for first place in the conference with a victory at Corvallis, Ore.

Luke Jackson had 15 points for Oregon (14-4, 6-1), which is a surprising contender nearing the midpoint of the conference schedule. Oregon is tied with USC for first.

The Ducks have won 10 of 11 games and already have exceeded their conference victory total from last season, when they were 5-13.

Philip Ricci had 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Oregon State (8-9, 1-6), which has lost six consecutive to its rival.

The Beavers, who haven’t had a winning season since 1989-90, are fighting to avoid being one of the bottom two teams in the Pac-10 and getting left out of the conference tournament.

California 90, Washington State 57--Amit Tamir scored 17 points to lead the Golden Bears over the Cougars at Berkeley.

Jamal Sampson and A.J. Diggs each had 12 points and Brian Wethers had 11 as California (13-3, 4-2) handed Washington State (4-11, 0-8) its 10th consecutive defeat. Sampson, a 6-foot-11 freshman center from Santa Ana Mater Dei High, also had a game-high nine rebounds in only 23 minutes.

The Bears shot 53% from the field, including eight of 14 by Tamir, who was one of 10 in a 62-50 victory over Washington on Thursday. It was the Bears’ second-best offensive output of the season.

Marcus Moore had 13 points and Shaminder Gill and Justin Lyman each had 12 for the Cougars, who committed 22 turnovers.
