Glamour took an elegant turn on the red carpet at Sunday’s Golden Globes, as stars celebrated the first major awards show of the year.

“It’s another example of America getting back to normal,” said Marg Helgenberger, who wore a black Valentino corset top and long skirt.

Several actresses, such as Lorna Luft, Peri Gilpin and Debra Messing, wore the gowns they had originally planned to wear to the Emmy Awards until the event was downscaled because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Messing playfully described her navy Oscar de la Renta ball gown as fit for “an Upper East Side girl gone bad.”

Fittingly for an event created by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., some of the night’s stunners choose European designers: Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tautou, both in black Yves Saint Laurent; Halle Berry in a bronze beaded Valentino; and Tilda Swinton in a sleek black Victor & Rolf.

Tuxedos were the rule for men, though Simon Baker and Sting tossed their ties. Though many stars wore classic black, most felt like celebrating Hollywood and all it stands for, even if times are uncertain.

“It’s crazy war-torn,” said Jane Kaczmarek, in colorful Cantu and Castillo, “so I’m going to be silly glamorous.”
